Avengers: Endgame was the epic culmination of the 21 MCU, or Marvel Cinematic Universe, movies that came before it and wrapped up what Marvel President Kevin Feige calls, “the Infinity Saga.” Endgame does exactly what it was supposed to do, it provided a conclusion to a storyline with over 20 movies weaved into it that started 11 years ago with the first Iron Man movie.
Without spoiling the film, the movie followed the remaining Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy characters as they attempt to restore the state of the universe after Thanos’ devastating snap in Avengers: Infinity War that left half of all life in the universe as a pile of dust.
Endgame did a great job mashing together many moving parts from the MCU throughout the movie, yet never allowing the story to be become hard to follow. The movie is split up into three very different acts, or parts. The second act separates the characters into groups, yet it still manages to bring all of them back together for the spectacular third act of the movie. It’s plot is so innovative and unique that each of these three acts has its own feel. The plot even manages to revisit and even expand on certain storylines that came into the MCU which will leave even the biggest Marvel fan satisfied.
Similar to Infinity War, one of Endgame’s biggest surprises is the way it was able to pull off a sufficient amount of humor. Given Endgame’s otherwise serious storyline, the amount of jokes that the Russos, the directors of Avengers: Endgame, were able to work into this movie was surprisingly high. That being said, the humor definitely dies down as the movie progresses and matters became far more serious, with most of the humor being in the first act and up until about midway through the second act. It manages to intertwine humor and seriousness in a way most movies never could.
Unlike Infinity War, the movie was focused heavily on the original six Avengers characters, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hulk/Bruce Banner, and Hawkeye. It wraps up each of the six original Avengers’ story arcs, sending them all off in either heartbreaking or heart-warming fashion, concluding their character’s story. Endgame also does not conclude the way anyone anticipates it to go. The plot is so innovative and unique that each of Endgame’s three acts has its own feel. The plot manages to revisit and even expand on many storylines that came in the MCU.
Endgame is one of the few movies that can include many really cool action sequences while also remaining truly story driven. The story makes this movie what it is. It is the only movie I have ever seen in which the audience can experience thrills, heartbreak, heart-warm, and happiness all in the span of about thirty minutes and consistently throughout the course of the movie.
Avengers: Endgame is the grand, emotional conclusion to the 11-year long, 22 movie story arc that satisfies even the most die-hard of MCU fans.
