These past four years have been crazy with our old administration being racist, homophobic, xenophobic, negligent with the pandemic, etc. Now, we don’t have to deal with that anymore, because Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have officially won the election. We have a new administration who will hopefully fix everything that Donald Trump and his administration messed up.
Many of us didn’t like Trump at all from him being xenophobic, saying, “We will build a great wall along the southern border.”
From him saying that the Black Lives Matter protest was a “symbol of hate.”
From him not taking COVID-19 seriously, as well as attacking LGBTQ+ Rights.
“It enraged me because it really showed that Trump was against the people and truly didn’t care about the people of America and his insensitive comments made it that much clearer,” said Daniela Cifuentes, a freshman at Oakland Mills High School.
Now, Trump and his administration are no longer in the White House after their failed attempt at re-election.
“I’m happy, I’m very happy, but it’s like okay, what’s the next steps?” said an unnamed student from Wilde Lake High School.
Trump’s administration failed at the COVID-19 response; they didn’t take it seriously at all. They didn’t have enough ventilators or testing kits. While cases were going higher and higher, they still didn’t take it seriously. When hundreds of people were dying every day, they still didn’t care. Trump stated that the situation was “very much under control,” but that wasn’t true. Since the Trump administration didn’t have a good grip on the COVID-19 pandemic, the unemployment rate went up even higher.
According to the University of Minnesota, “The country has lost 20.6 million jobs since mid-March, resulting in an unemployment rate of 14.7%, a level not seen since the Great Depression in the 1930s,”
The Trump administration didn’t help small businesses that were temporarily shutting down. While they helped big businesses that really didn’t need extra support, small businesses were left in the dust.
The Biden and Harris administration are in the White House. They will help the small businesses way more. They will enact dozens of policies to help small businesses get better access to the capital, gaining more opportunities, to help women, veterans, and minority businesses.
Trump and Pence’s administration failed at handling immigration. They wanted to build a wall in an attempt to stop illegal immigrants from entering the United States. The Trump and Pence administration also separated families that were trying to seek asylum in the United States. Trump’s administration went to federal court to argue about not giving toothpaste, soap, and sleep to the children they put in cages.
“We need to take away children,” said the former attorney general, Jeff Sessions who was in a conference call with prosecutors concerned about the border and the children’s welfare.
“Horrible, if we are supposed to be a nation that was built on the foundations of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We become hypocritical for those who need it most. These families are coming in search of a better life and these children are terrified as it is separating them, but cause problems,” said Cifuentes.
The Biden and Harris administration in their first 100 days will completely undo the Trump administration’s “cruel and senseless policies” that split up children from their families. They will also make sure that immigrants can seek asylum more easily. Biden and Harris want to make sure that they follow the Statue of Liberty of “yearning to breathe free,” which the Trump and Pence administration took away.
Trump and Pence’s administration has been taking away LGBTQ+ rights. They have banned transgenders from entering the military and have openly supported discrimination against LGBTQ+ employes by submitting amicus briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court, “supporting discrimination against LGBTQ people.” He allowed adoption agencies to hinder LGBTQ+ parents from getting a child.
The Biden and Harris administration will change that because they believe in equal rights for all Americans, not just some. They will restore Obama’s executive order to stop discrimination in the workspace. They will completely stop banning transgenders from entering the military, “To allow gay, lesbian, and bisexual service members to serve the country they love without hiding their sexual orientation.” They will work with the U.S. Department of Sates and many other federal agencies to make sure LGBTQ+ families have the right to adopt children.
“No one should be fired, denied a home or access to services because of who they are or who they love,” said Joe Biden.
Joe Biden on day one has signed 17 executive orders most of them are undoing what former President Trump had. He signed an order stopping the building of the wall, stopped the travel banned on Muslim countries, ordered a mask mandate on all federal property, he also stopped the United States from leaving the World Health Organization and rejoined the Paris Climate Agreement. He signed many more executive orders as well.
“There’s no time to start like today,” said Biden as he started to sign the executive orders.
