Kaylee Hottle, the deaf actress who captured hearts worldwide playing Jia in two “Godzilla” blockbusters, died early Tuesday morning after a single-vehicle crash in Ijamsville, Maryland. She was 18 years old.
What happened in the early hours of Tuesday morning
The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Hottle was a passenger in a car that left the road and struck a culvert before 3 a.m. A 19-year-old male driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. A second passenger declined medical treatment. Hottle was the only fatality.

Authorities said excessive speed is believed to have been a contributing factor. The crash remains under active investigation.
The role that made her a star
Hottle was best known for playing Jia, a young deaf Iwi girl with a profound bond with Kong, in the 2021 film “Godzilla vs. Kong” and its 2024 sequel, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.” She was born into a multigenerational deaf family on her father’s side and was a native signer of American Sign Language, making her casting in both films particularly meaningful to the deaf community.
In a March 2024 interview on “Good Morning America,” she spoke about what the role meant to her and to deaf representation in mainstream cinema.
Her family’s grief
Her parents, Joshua and Ketsi Hottle, shared video statements on social media in the hours after news of her death broke. “Kaylee’s mom and four siblings are crushed,” her father said in his statement.
Hottle had only just turned 18, and by every account was at the beginning of what many in the industry expected to be a long career. Her visibility in two major studio releases gave her a platform that few young deaf actors have ever had, and her performances drew praise well beyond fan circles.
She is survived by her parents and four siblings.
