A shooting at one of Seattle’s most popular summer food festivals left three people dead and four others hospitalized Sunday evening, sending crowds scrambling and drawing a heavy police response to the grounds just steps from the Space Needle.
Gunfire in a crowded place
The shots rang out around 6 p.m. at Seattle Center during the Bite of Seattle, an annual three-day festival that draws hundreds of vendors, performers, and thousands of attendees each summer. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene. A third died later at a hospital. Four others, including a 2-year-old boy, were transported to Harborview Medical Center and are listed in stable condition. A fifth person later walked into a separate hospital with a gunshot wound.

The victims suffered injuries to the arm and abdomen, among other wounds, according to hospital officials.
What investigators believe happened
Seattle Police Assistant Chief Tyrone Davis said investigators believe two people were shooting at each other when the violence broke out, and that the gunfire was not a random attack on festival-goers. “We’re still trying to figure this out,” Davis said at a press briefing Sunday night.
One suspect, described by Davis as a “young person,” was taken into custody. A second suspect remained at large as of Sunday evening, though Davis said police did not yet have a description of that individual. Authorities stressed there is no ongoing threat to the general public.
A festival turned crime scene
The Bite of Seattle has run for decades as a signature Seattle summer event, typically drawing large, family-friendly crowds across a full weekend. The shooting occurred in the festival’s final hours on Sunday, its third and last day.
Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson addressed the shooting publicly, and city officials confirmed the full scope of the response as details continued to emerge through the evening.
The investigation remains active, and police have not yet released the identities of the victims or the person in custody.
