GARY, Indiana — Two years after 14-year-old Ja’Niyah McMichael vanished, her case remains unsolved, and the people fighting for answers say the silence around it has only grown louder.

Ja’Niyah was reported missing on August 12, 2024, from the 1900 block of Malcolm X Boulevard in Gary. Investigators believe she may be the victim of foul play, and the FBI continues to treat her disappearance as an active investigation.

At the time she went missing, Ja’Niyah was last seen wearing black pajama pants, a black hooded sweatshirt, and red and black shoes. She has known connections to Gary and East Chicago, Indiana.

A $20,000 Reward, and Still No Answers

Authorities have put real money behind the search for information. A combined $20,000 reward is being offered for details that lead to an arrest and conviction: $10,000 from the FBI and another $10,000 from the City of Gary.

Yet despite that reward and steady public pressure, the case has stalled in the eyes of many advocates. As Executive News Producer of Missing Lost And Trafficked – Lured Lost And Unsolved, I have followed Ja’Niyah’s story closely for two years, from my own hometown of Gary. In that time, one question keeps returning: why has there been so little public communication from local police?

Calls for a Press Conference Go Unanswered

Gary Police Chief Derrick Cannon has not hosted a public press conference on Ja’Niyah’s case. That absence has frustrated families and advocates who believe a coordinated public appeal could shake loose new information.

The concern has grown large enough to spark a Change.org petition, which directly demands that Chief Cannon hold a press conference on the case.

Supporters argue that a missing child, a suspected crime, and a standing reward all warrant far more visible attention from the department leading the local response.

A Disturbing Claim From the Family

The case took an even more troubling turn through the family itself. In a Facebook livestream, Ja’Niyah’s grandmother stated that one of Ja’Niyah’s siblings claimed the teen was thrown into water by her own mother.

That allegation has not been independently verified, and it should be treated as an unproven claim made by a family member on social media.

Still, it raises an obvious and urgent question for investigators: to date, no water searches have been conducted in connection with the case. For a family already living with two years of uncertainty, that gap is difficult to accept.

How the Public Can Help

The path forward depends heavily on people who may know something, even something small.

Anyone with information can contact the FBI anonymously:

  • Online at tips.fbi.gov
  • By phone at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324)

No detail is too minor. Tips that seem insignificant have broken open cold cases before.

Lend Your Voice: “FIND JA’NIYAH”

You can also help keep Ja’Niyah’s name in front of the public. Missing Lost And Trafficked is asking supporters to take one of two simple actions:

  • Record a 30-second video saying “FIND JA’NIYAH” and submit it via WeTransfer at https://wetransfer.com/
  • Email us directly at MLTInvestigations@outlook.com to share your video or your thoughts on her disappearance

Every voice adds pressure. Every share extends her reach. Two years is far too long for a child to be missing without answers, and Ja’Niyah’s family deserves both a real search and a real response.

If you know something, say something. Help us find Ja’Niyah.
