Discussed 10/26/17
Girls and Boys soccer are going into playoffs soon and captains Adrienne Vaughn and Viraj Patwardhan discuss what to expect.
Adrienne: We start playoffs on Tuesday. The game will be against Centennial. We beat them in overtime during regular season and, hopefully if we face them, we will win in 80 minutes without having to go into overtime.
Viraj: Oh, didn’t both of those teams end your playoff run early in the past few years, like since your freshman year?
Adrienne: I mean yeah, but at least last year after we won the county championship and beat Long Reach in the first round of playoffs. We lost to Centennial because we had so many injured players and most of our starters were playing with pain. So, last year doesn’t really count. The years prior however, we lost because of the curse. But this year, we are actually going far. I feel it.
Viraj: What curse are you talking about?
Adrienne: The curse of having a strong regular season and then losing after getting a first round bye. It happens like every single year.
Viraj: Didn’t you guys have a first round bye this year and finished top three?
Adrienne: Ard ard ard, this year is different though. We are going into playoffs with no serious injuries, and we are going to take it one game at a time.
Viraj: I guess we’ll see. I think we have a better chance of going farther in playoffs than you.
Adrienne: I don’t want to hear it. Just because boys soccer got lucky one time and went to state semi-finals because you had an amazing senior class to help you guys pull it together after your under 500 season, doesn’t mean you guys are going to be able to do that again.
Viraj: Well, we did have one of the strongest seasons this year compared to the past few years. We had our five game win streak and big wins against River Hill and Centennial, who are both top in the county. Centennial was our last game of the regular season, and we won 3-2 in overtime. During the regular season game, we did not have our starting goalie due to illness. He will be returning for our playoff game. The game is going to be competitive; Centennial will be looking to get revenge for the regular season loss.
Adrienne: Yeah that game was really close. I just remember watching it during our teams warm-ups since we played right after you guys. And all of a sudden you guys were screaming because you had tied up the game and were going into overtime.
Viraj: It was very exciting to come back from a 2-0 deficit and to tie it up. We had the momentum going into overtime and knew that we had a good chance of winning it. We will see how Tuesday goes.

Adrienne: The girls won 5-1 against Centennial!! Victoria Huxtable came in clutch with the first and fourth goals, Christina Rogers got the second goal, Lilly Decelles finessed the third goal, and lastly Catalina Lennon got the last goal. We hope to continue our playoff run after we play Reservoir today at 5pm. In the past four years, we have not lost a single game to Reservoir and hope to maintain this streak.
Viraj: It was an unfortunate ending to the season, but it was a well fought game. Overall, the season was very successful and boys soccer wishes the girls good luck on the rest of their season. #roadtostates

Viraj: Yesterday was super close, I was on the edge of my seat the whole game.
Adrienne: Yeah I was really nervous that we were not going to catch a dub. Thankfully Catalina Lennon was able to make a great shot in the last 15 minutes of the game that went right over the keeper’s head.
Viraj: Yeah that was so clutch; who do you guys play next?
Adrienne: We will be playing Chesapeake on Tuesday at 5pm. Fortunately, it will be a home game, but unfortunately we do not know a lot about this team. I have faith that we will come out on top though. We will be competing for the region title. If we win we will be the third Atholton Girls Varsity Soccer team to win the region title since the school has opened.
