A relentless heat dome has locked itself over Europe, driving temperatures to levels that have never been recorded before and leaving governments scrambling to protect their populations. The crisis is deepening, with forecasters warning the worst days are still ahead.

France at the center of a historic emergency

France has borne the brunt of the heat so far. Tuesday brought the country its hottest day since records began, a milestone that underscores just how far outside normal bounds this event sits. The human cost is already severe. French Prime Minister announced that at least 40 people have drowned since June 18, most of them seeking relief from the heat in rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water that carry their own hidden dangers when people enter them in desperation or exhaustion.

Hundreds of temperature records have been broken across the continent, and meteorologists expect more to fall as the heat intensifies through Wednesday and Thursday.

Britain braces for something it has almost never seen

The UK Met Office has issued Red Extreme Heat Warnings for today and tomorrow, a designation so rare it signals a genuine threat to life rather than simple discomfort. Forecasters expect temperatures to reach at least 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit (39 degrees Celsius) in parts of England. If that happens, it would shatter the UK’s existing June heat record of 96.08 degrees Fahrenheit (35.6 degrees Celsius) by a wide margin. Londoners are already describing the conditions as unlike anything they can remember, with the city’s infrastructure, built for a much cooler climate, offering little relief.

Italy and the wider picture

Italy has declared red heatwave alerts in 16 cities, including Rome, as the same system baking France and the UK pushes south and east. The pattern is consistent with what climate scientists have been projecting for years: Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth, and extreme heat events are arriving more frequently, more intensely, and earlier in the season than historical records would suggest is normal.

What makes this event different

The mechanism driving the crisis is a heat dome, a high-pressure system that traps hot air over a region and prevents cooler air from moving in. These systems are not new, but their intensity is increasing as background temperatures rise. The combination of record-breaking peaks, the speed at which records are falling, and the geographic scale of the event makes this one of the most significant heat emergencies Europe has faced.

Health authorities across the continent are urging people to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and check on elderly neighbors and relatives, who face the highest risk of heat-related illness and death.
