It was a family affair at Independence Mall in Philadelphia on Tuesday, July 14, and for Justin Verlander and Kate Upton, it carried a weight that made it feel different from every red carpet before it.

The couple brought their two children, daughter Genevieve and son Bellamy, to the 2026 MLB All-Star Red Carpet Show presented by Mastercard, turning what is usually a solo player appearance into a full family moment. For many watching, it landed as exactly what it was: a send-off.

A look that matched the occasion

Upton stepped out in a short, off-the-shoulder dress with gold heels and sunglasses, while Verlander coordinated in a blue suit, white collared shirt, and shades of his own. Genevieve wore a white top, completing a family look that felt polished but relaxed, the kind of thing you wear when you want to remember the photos.

The appearance comes just a week after Verlander publicly announced that the 2026 MLB season will be his last. The 43-year-old Detroit Tigers starter is selected as the All-Star Game’s “Legend Pick” this year, a fitting designation given what he has meant to the sport across more than two decades.

What he said on the carpet

Verlander did not leave much room for hope about a comeback when reporters pressed him on the subject during the red carpet. Asked what it would take to change his mind about retiring, he was direct.

“I don’t know if there’s much you can do at this point,” he said.

His Tigers teammate Tarik Skubal has apparently been nudging him with the old line that all the greats eventually return. Verlander acknowledged it with a laugh, but then grounded the conversation in reality, noting that he has been dealing with health issues through the first half of the season and has not been able to pitch consistently.

“Here we are at the All-Star Break and I can’t get healthy and pitch,” he said, before adding that he is hopeful the second half of the season goes better.

Why this one mattered

Red carpet appearances at the All-Star Game are a regular fixture, but this one had a finality to it that most do not. Verlander is one of the most decorated pitchers of his generation, a two-time Cy Young Award winner and a World Series champion. Upton, a model and actress who has been by his side through much of that run, rarely makes these appearances a family event. Bringing both kids along felt like a deliberate choice to mark the moment.

For Tigers fans and baseball fans broadly, seeing the family together on that carpet in Philadelphia offered something the box score never could: a human picture of what the end of a great career actually looks like.
