Flau’jae Johnson Is Becoming One of the Most Important Names in Women’s Basketball

She plays for LSU. She raps professionally. She has a Nike deal, a growing media presence, and a fanbase that spans sports and music. At 21 years old, Flau’jae Johnson is doing something that very few athletes manage: building a genuine cultural identity that exists well beyond the sport she plays.

But strip away the branding and the buzz, and what you still have is a seriously good basketball player who helped LSU reach the top of college women’s basketball. That foundation is what makes everything else possible.

Where her game actually stands

Johnson is a guard for the LSU Tigers, and her numbers in the 2024-25 season reflected just how central she has become to the team’s offense. She averaged over 19 points per game, shot efficiently from three-point range, and brought an energy to LSU’s backcourt that was hard to replace when she was off the floor. She is physical, quick, and competitive in a way that shows up in the moments that matter most, late in close games, on the road, against ranked opponents.

She was named to the All-SEC team and drew serious attention from national media as one of the faces of the sport heading into the postseason. Her ability to create her own shot separates her from most guards at the college level. She does not need a clean look to score, which makes her genuinely difficult to defend.

The dual career that actually works

Most athlete-artist crossovers are more marketing exercise than real creative output. Johnson is a legitimate exception. She has been rapping since she was a teenager, and she signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label, which is not a deal handed out for optics. Her music has real reach, and she takes it seriously enough to have built a discography that stands on its own.

What makes her situation unusual is that neither career appears to be suffering for the other. She is not a distracted player trying to moonlight as a musician, and she is not a basketball player used as a promotional vehicle. Both things are real, and she manages them with a level of focus that is genuinely rare at 21.

Her NIL value reflects that. She ranks among the highest-valued college athletes in the country, with brand partnerships that include Nike and reach into lifestyle, fashion, and entertainment. Those deals came because her audience is broad and loyal, not because a sponsor wanted a basketball player to hold a product.

What she comes from

Context matters with Johnson, because her story has weight behind it. Her father, Camron Johnson, was a rapper who was shot and killed in 2003 when Flau’jae was just a few months old. She has spoken openly about carrying his memory through her music, and that connection gives her creative work a seriousness that goes beyond ambition.

She grew up in Baton Rouge, which made her decision to stay home and play for LSU feel personal rather than purely strategic. She had the profile to go anywhere. Choosing to play for Kim Mulkey in front of a home state crowd was a statement about identity, not just a recruiting decision.

The bigger picture for women’s basketball

Johnson exists at an interesting moment for the sport. Caitlin Clark’s rise brought an enormous new audience to women’s college basketball, and the WNBA saw record viewership and attendance figures follow. That wave has created space for other players to build profiles that would have been much harder to sustain even three or four years ago.

Johnson benefits from that environment, but she is also contributing to it. Her crossover appeal brings fans in who might not have found women’s basketball through traditional channels. A teenager who follows her music might watch an LSU game because of her. That kind of audience expansion is genuinely valuable for the sport.

Season Points Per Game Three-Point % Key Honors
2022-23 14.0 35.2% SEC All-Freshman Team
2023-24 17.2 37.8% All-SEC Second Team
2024-25 19.4 38.6% All-SEC First Team

What comes next

The WNBA Draft is the logical next step, and Johnson is widely projected as a lottery pick when she declares. Her combination of scoring ability, size for a guard, and marketability makes her exactly the kind of player a franchise would want to build around, both on the court and in the broader business of growing a team’s profile.

Whether she stays at LSU for another season or enters the draft, the trajectory is clear. She is one of the most complete young players in the country, and her ability to hold two serious careers at once suggests she will handle the professional transition better than most.

Women’s basketball is producing a generation of players who are redefining what it means to be an athlete in public life. Flau’jae Johnson is near the front of that group, and she got there by being genuinely excellent at more than one thing.
