Pluralibacter Gergoviae Shampoo Recall: Kao USA Recalls Oribe Shampoo Over Bacterial Contamination Concerns
Kao USA has voluntarily recalled select lots of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo in the United States and Canada after the company detected Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria in certain production batches.

The recall affects the 8.5 oz and 33.8 oz sizes manufactured between February 21 and February 26, 2026. Only specific lot codes are involved, meaning not every bottle of the shampoo is subject to the recall.
Which bottles are affected
Consumers should check both the UPC code and the lot code printed on their bottle. The affected 8.5 oz bottles carry UPC 840035231242 and lot code YR010556. The affected 33.8 oz bottles carry UPC 840035231273 and lot codes YR010566 and YR010576.
If your bottle matches both the UPC and a lot code listed above, stop using it immediately.
What the bacteria means for you
Pluralibacter gergoviae is an environmental bacterium that rarely causes problems in people who are otherwise healthy. The concern is higher for anyone with a compromised immune system, including people undergoing chemotherapy, those living with certain chronic conditions, or anyone on immunosuppressive medication. For that group, even a bacterium considered low-risk in general terms warrants caution.
Kao has described the recall as a precautionary measure and says it is working with the FDA while investigating the source and full scope of the contamination.
What to do with the product
Kao is asking retail stores and salon partners to pull the affected lots from shelves and return them for safe disposal. If you purchased one of the affected bottles directly, do not continue using it. Hold onto it or dispose of it, and watch for further guidance from Kao or the FDA on the return or refund process.
Checking the lot code takes only a few seconds and is the fastest way to know whether your bottle is part of this recall.
