Nearly 685,000 bags of Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips are at the center of a serious food safety alert after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration elevated the ongoing recall to its most severe classification.

The FDA designated the recall a Class I on July 1, meaning the agency has determined there is a reasonable probability that consuming the affected product could cause serious health consequences or death. It is the highest risk category the FDA assigns, and it is not handed out lightly.
How the contamination concern started
The recall was first initiated in May by Utz Quality Foods, a Pennsylvania-based subsidiary of Utz Brands. The company was notified that a dry milk powder ingredient sourced from California Dairies, Inc. through a third-party vendor may have contained salmonella. That supplier had already issued its own separate recall of the ingredient.
Utz says the specific seasoning batches used in its production actually tested negative for salmonella before the chips were packaged. The company framed its decision to pull the products as a precautionary move rather than a response to a confirmed outbreak.
What is being recalled
The recall covers select flavors, bag sizes, and production batches across the Zapp’s and Dirty brand lines. Consumers who have either of these brands at home should check the FDA’s recall database for the specific UPC codes and lot numbers covered under the recall, and avoid eating any bags that match.
What salmonella exposure actually means
Salmonella is a bacterial infection that typically causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps within 12 to 72 hours of exposure. Most healthy adults recover without medical treatment, but the infection can be severe or even life-threatening for young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.
Anyone who has eaten the recalled chips and develops symptoms should contact a healthcare provider. Recalled products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase for a refund.
