An 8-year-old South Bend boy reported missing and believed to be in danger has been located safe, police confirmed Saturday, bringing a swift resolution to a search that prompted a statewide alert.

Carlito Chism was last seen at approximately 11:30 a.m. on July 12 in the 1000 block of Lincoln Way West. He was believed to be traveling on foot with his 38-year-old mother, Carrie Crawford, who authorities described as armed and dangerous.
A statewide alert went out fast
The South Bend Police Department moved quickly, and a Statewide Silver Alert was declared as the search expanded. Carlito was described as a Black male standing five feet tall, weighing 65 pounds, with black dreadlocks tipped in gold and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a colorful shirt and khaki shorts.
Crawford, described as a 38-year-old Black woman standing five feet tall and weighing 190 pounds, drew serious concern from investigators, who considered the child to be in extreme danger given her presence.
What happened after he was found
Carlito was located and confirmed safe, though police had not yet made contact with his mother, Carrie Crawford, as of the latest update. Her whereabouts remain unknown, and the investigation is ongoing.
