For many students, a week sleeping under the stars or hiking through a national forest is more than a field trip. It is often the first time they have ever left their city, breathed clean mountain air, or built friendships outside their usual circle. This summer, that experience has been taken off the table for tens of thousands of kids across the country, as sweeping federal funding cuts force outdoor education programs to shut down with little warning.

A sudden loss with lasting consequences

The cancellations stem from the Trump administration’s decision to halt billions of dollars in federal grants for K-12 schools. While some of those funds were later released under specific conditions, money tied to a range of educational programs, including those supporting outdoor and environmental education, remains frozen or has been cut outright. Organizers and school administrators say they had almost no time to prepare, leaving students, parents, and program staff scrambling.

Outdoor education advocates describe the cuts as disproportionately harmful to students who were already least likely to access nature on their own, including low-income kids, recent immigrants, and children in urban areas where green space is scarce. These are the students who benefit most from structured outdoor experiences, and they are the ones losing access first.

What these programs actually do

Outdoor education is not simply camping for fun. Research consistently links time in nature to improved mental health, stronger academic engagement, and better social development in young people. Programs built around hiking, wilderness survival, environmental science, and team challenges give students practical skills and confidence that classroom instruction rarely replicates.

For students like Nazma Begum, who immigrated to Detroit from Bangladesh at 13 and barely spoke English when she arrived, a school-organized camping trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula changed the course of her life. She described lying in her tent by the lake and realizing she had found something entirely new. She went on to co-found an outdoor adventure club at her high school and is now a sophomore at the University of Michigan. Stories like hers are exactly what these programs are designed to produce, and exactly what disappears when funding dries up.

The gap no one is rushing to fill

When federal grants vanish suddenly, there is rarely a local or state budget ready to absorb the loss. Schools that had already booked sites, hired guides, arranged transportation, and enrolled students were left to cancel everything, often just weeks before programs were set to begin. Refunds, logistics, and disappointed families followed.

Some nonprofit outdoor organizations are trying to expand access through private donations and partnerships, but they cannot come close to matching the scale of what federal funding supported. The students who miss out this summer will not get a second chance at the same age.

A pattern worth watching

The outdoor education cuts are part of a broader freeze affecting multiple federally funded school programs. The Migrant Education Program, which has operated since 1966 and provides bilingual tutors to children of seasonal farmworkers, is also facing defunding, leaving California alone staring down more than $650 million in frozen grants.

Taken together, the cuts signal a significant pullback from federally supported enrichment and support programs that have served vulnerable student populations for decades. Whether Congress intervenes or courts force a release of the frozen funds remains unclear. What is clear is that for the students who were counting on these programs this summer, the window has already closed.
