Students snoring, the majority of freshman failing, rise in AI use from students, education has become unimportant to many. But is it really that important?

Education has been a staple in life since the late 1800’s, with students attending from Kindergarten to senior year, some even choosing to do preschool. Education was valued as an incredible privilege for children to have, with the majority being uneducated.

So many laws, court cases, and acts have been put in place to give equal access for education to all. However almost 200 years later students seem to place education as one of the more optional things in life.

A shocking statistic from ABC news shows that ACT and SAT scores are at an all time low for the first time in 30 years, as of 2023. With COVID stunting education for almost three years for some, many elementary and middle school educators are finding a trend in students being unable to read, spell, do basic math, or comprehend information.

This decline in the average intelligence of a student has schools scrambling to ensure they still pass the same amount of students. There are numerous reasons for a student to be failing a class, however the stats of failures compared to passing students in 2024 is shocking. It seems that students have collectively checked out from education.

Although education may not be important for some careers like social media, or certain trades, for the 99% of people who aren’t going to become the next Mark Zuckerberg, education is an incredibly important privilege.

On average those with a bachelor’s degree make “an above average income, and it’s an impressive $47,800 more than those who only have a high school diploma” according to a 2022 Federal Reserve Report.

Education also exposes students to different cultures, races, traditions and helps them to become more well rounded and informed people. But America’s education system is far from perfect, let alone okay. Many students often fail because they don’t have the financial means to support themselves going into higher education.

Without a quality education, it’s hard to make money, apply for loans, vote, or participate in integral and important parts of society. A push for free college has been in the world for many years, however it is more important than ever.

Until then, students should apply to scholarships and call schools about financial aid. Many schools will help out with the cost and sometimes will provide full ride scholarships to students who need it most, or those with the top grades.

But in order for students to be able to get top grades they need a good Education and an open mindset in schools to help students achieve.
