Every spring, excitement fills the air as spring sports are going on. The MLB season is getting started, and the NHL and NBA seasons are coming close to playoff time. But there is one sport that stands alone during March: college basketball.
During this time college basketball fans get ready and excited for one of the most thrilling events of the year, March Madness. For the students at Atholton High School, it isn’t just about the games, it’s about the fun of creating brackets and competing with friends.
Making brackets is so fun and competitive because the chance of someone getting an absolute perfect bracket is less than a quintillionth percent! That is because March Madness is single elimination! Meaning that if a team loses once, they are eliminated.
But the astronomically low odds of getting a perfect bracket doesn’t stop people from trying to get one, including students at our very own Atholton High School.
“I mean, I love Duke, and I don’t see a world where they don’t go all the way,” (unfortunately for Andre, Duke lost) said Atholton sophomore and bracket maker Andre Johnson.
“Cooper Flagg is just too good, and I think he’ll carry them to the promised land.” Johnson is only one of many Atholton students who made a bracket with others like Josiah Thomas, who said that making a March Madness bracket “brings out the endorphins inside me” and “it’s a nice thing to do in your free time.”
A lot of people have their predictions of who’s going to win the whole thing with Thomas, who thought Maryland was going to win it all, fellow sophomore, Porter Fox, who thinks Florida is going all the way and Johnson, who favored Duke.
But despite whoever you think is going to win, the fun and excitement of making a March Madness bracket and seeing how the teams go against each other is what makes March so special for basketball. Get ready because on April 7th the number one ranked Florida Gators and number one ranked Houston Cougars face off for the men’s championship.
