At 83, Carly Simon is stepping back into the light, and she’s doing it on her own terms. After nearly seven years of near-total quiet, the singer-songwriter behind “You’re So Vain” has revealed the health struggles that kept her away, and announced that she is releasing her first album in 18 years.
The truth behind the silence
Simon addressed fans in a heartfelt statement to People, acknowledging the concern that had been building around her extended absence. “So many people have written to me, kindly wondering about my relative silence, asking how I am and what I have been doing,” she said. “The truth is, I’ve been learning how to live with Parkinson’s disease.”

The two-time Grammy winner explained that coming to terms with the diagnosis took time, not just medically, but personally. “It has taken me some time to understand the diagnosis, to adjust to it, and to decide how much I wanted to say about it publicly,” she shared. “Some days I’m so tired I can’t get the day moving at all. On others, it gives me a little more room to move, think, work, and feel like myself.”
Parkinson’s is a progressive neurodegenerative disease with no cure. It can cause muscle stiffness, uncontrolled movement, impaired speech, and deep fatigue, symptoms that vary widely from day to day, which Simon’s words reflect with striking honesty.
A second diagnosis, and a changed face
Shortly after receiving her Parkinson’s diagnosis, Simon was also treated for basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer, on her face. The surgery that followed affected her appearance, and she has spoken openly about how that contributed to her withdrawal from public life. For a performer whose image has always been part of her presence, it was a compounding blow.
That she chose to address both diagnoses together, rather than hide one or the other, says something about where she is now.
Music as the way forward
Rather than retreating further, Simon is releasing *Comes in Waves*, her first album in 18 years. The project signals that neither diagnosis has closed off her creative life, even if it has reshaped it.
For fans who grew up with *No Secrets*, *Anticipation*, or *Coming Around Again*, the news of a new record will carry a particular weight. Simon has always written from the inside of her own experience, and if this album follows that instinct, it may be among the most personal work she has ever made.
The return is not triumphant in the traditional sense. It’s quieter, more considered, and probably more true.
