Eric Bieniemy’s Wife Shot at Virginia Home, Son Arrested and Charged

The family of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is at the center of a deeply troubling situation after his wife was shot Sunday night at their home in Ashburn, Virginia, allegedly by the couple’s own son.

Mia Bieniemy, 57, sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including injuries to her chest and arm, and was transported to a hospital where she was later listed in stable condition. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office confirmed officers responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 7:32 p.m. ET, locating an adult female with serious injuries.
Son Taken Into Custody
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, was arrested at the scene and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He is currently being held without bond at a detention center in Loudoun County.
Authorities have not publicly detailed a motive or the circumstances that led to the shooting.
Bieniemy Left Camp to Be with His Family
Eric Bieniemy was in St. Joseph, Missouri, with the Chiefs for training camp when the incident occurred. He has since left camp to be with his family.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the situation after Monday’s practice, offering a direct and emotional statement.
“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy,” Reid said. “Mia is stable, which is a plus. We all love EB, and you hate seeing those things happen.”
The Chiefs organization also released a statement confirming it is “aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family.”
A Familiar Area for the Bienimeys
The family’s connection to northern Virginia runs through Eric Bieniemy’s one-year stint as the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator in 2023, before he returned to Kansas City ahead of this season. Ashburn is the same area where the Commanders hold their own training operations, making it a familiar base for the family.
No timeline has been given for when or whether Bieniemy will return to training camp. For now, the Chiefs are giving their coordinator the space and time he needs as his wife continues to recover.
