Liverpool Vs Wrexham: Rio Ngumoha’s Goal Seals Liverpool’s Win Over Wrexham at Yankee Stadium

Liverpool made it two wins from two in pre-season as a second-half strike from teenage winger Rio Ngumoha proved enough to beat Wrexham 1-0 at New York’s Yankee Stadium, continuing the early momentum under new head coach Andoni Iraola.

A statement night in the Big Apple

The occasion had plenty of spectacle around it. Wrexham, riding high on their documentary-fuelled rise through the English football pyramid, brought their Hollywood energy to one of sport’s most iconic venues. Phil Parkinson’s side had just narrowly missed out on the Championship play-offs last season, so they were far from soft opposition.

Liverpool, though, had the quality to see it through. Ngumoha’s second-half goal was the difference, and it was the kind of moment that gives a young player real confidence heading into a new season. The 17-year-old had already caught the eye in Liverpool’s opening pre-season win over Sunderland, a 4-2 victory in Nashville that marked Iraola’s first game in charge, and he backed that up with a decisive contribution at Yankee Stadium.

Iraola finding his feet quickly

The Spanish head coach has wasted no time putting his stamp on things. After the final whistle, Iraola singled out five young players for praise, a clear signal that he intends to give academy talent genuine opportunities to impress during this pre-season window.

Dominik Szoboszlai also caught attention, wearing the captain’s armband during the match and reportedly sending a clear message to his teammates about his readiness to step into a leadership role. He is widely considered the frontrunner to become Liverpool’s new vice-captain.

Who was there and who wasn’t

The squad is still taking shape. Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Ryan Gravenberch all made the trip to the United States and were available for selection, adding genuine quality to the group. Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo, however, returned to the AXA Training Centre and are expected to rejoin the squad next week.

At the back, Iraola is working with limited options. Jeremy Jacquet and Joe Gomez were both unavailable through injury, and Giovanni Leoni remains sidelined with a longer-term issue. Depth in central defence is an area that will need addressing before the season begins.

What the result means

Two pre-season games, two wins. It is early days, but the signs are encouraging. Young players like Trey Nyoni and Kieran Morrison are pushing for attention, the senior stars are filtering back in, and Iraola is already building a clear identity. The Yankee Stadium win over Wrexham was a small step, but it pointed in the right direction.
