If you’re drawn to higher education but want to work directly with students rather than in a classroom, student affairs might be the career path you’ve been looking for. Maryland is one of the better states to pursue it. With more than 60 colleges and universities spread across the state, from large research institutions to community colleges and private liberal arts schools, there’s a genuine range of opportunities across different institution types, salary levels, and specializations.

→ What the Social Security Administration Actually Does — and Why It Matters More Than Most People Realize

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to move into a senior role, here’s a practical breakdown of what student affairs work in Maryland actually looks like.

What Student Affairs Work Actually Involves

Student affairs is the umbrella term for the professionals who support student life outside the academic curriculum. That covers a wide range of departments and functions, and the job titles can vary significantly from one institution to the next.

Common roles include:

  • – Residence Life Coordinators who manage on-campus housing and residential communities
  • – Dean of Students positions that handle student conduct, crisis response, and institutional advocacy
  • – Career Services Advisors who help students with job searches, internships, and professional development
  • – Counseling Center Staff, including licensed counselors and mental health case managers
  • – Multicultural Affairs and DEI Coordinators who support underrepresented student populations
  • – Student Activities and Programming Coordinators who run campus events and student organizations
  • – Disability Services Coordinators who manage accommodations and compliance
  • – Financial Aid Advisors who guide students through funding processes
  • – New Student Orientation Coordinators who manage onboarding programs

Entry-level roles like Resident Director or Academic Advisor typically require a bachelor’s degree, though a master’s in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or a related field is increasingly expected even for mid-level positions. Senior roles almost always require a graduate degree and several years of progressively responsible experience.

Where the Jobs Are in Maryland

Maryland’s geography works in your favor if you’re job hunting in this field. The state has a dense cluster of institutions in the Baltimore-Washington corridor, which means you can often access multiple campuses without relocating.

Baltimore and Surrounding Area

Baltimore is home to several significant employers in this space. Johns Hopkins University, Towson University, Morgan State University, Loyola University Maryland, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) all maintain active student affairs departments. Community colleges like the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) also hire regularly, particularly for advising and student support roles.

The Washington, D.C. Suburbs

Montgomery County and Prince George’s County offer another strong cluster of opportunities. The University of Maryland, College Park is one of the largest employers in student affairs in the entire state, with dozens of departments and a constant need for both entry-level and experienced professionals. Montgomery College and Prince George’s Community College round out the options for those interested in the community college sector.

Smaller Institutions Across the State

Don’t overlook smaller schools. Frostburg State University in Western Maryland, Salisbury University on the Eastern Shore, and St. Mary’s College of Maryland each offer student affairs roles, often with a closer-knit campus culture and more direct access to senior leadership. Competition for these positions can be less intense, and the experience gained at a smaller institution can be genuinely valuable for career growth.

What These Roles Pay in Maryland

Salaries in student affairs vary considerably based on institution size, role level, and whether the position includes housing benefits.

Entry-level positions like Resident Director roles often come with a salary in the range of $35,000 to $45,000, frequently supplemented by free or subsidized on-campus housing and a meal plan, which changes the overall compensation picture significantly.

Mid-level roles, such as Associate Director of Student Activities or Senior Advisor, typically fall between $55,000 and $75,000 depending on the institution. At large research universities like the University of Maryland, College Park, these figures can push higher.

Senior positions, including Director-level and Dean of Students roles, generally range from $80,000 to over $120,000 at larger institutions. Maryland’s public universities are required to post salary ranges in job listings, which makes it easier to compare opportunities before applying.

Where to Search for Open Positions

A few job boards are particularly useful for this field:

  • – HigherEdJobs.com is the go-to platform for college and university positions and has a strong inventory of Maryland listings
  • – LinkedIn is worth checking regularly, especially for director-level and administrative roles
  • – Individual university HR pages often post openings before they appear on aggregator sites, so bookmarking the careers pages of your target institutions pays off
  • – NASPA (the professional association for student affairs administrators) maintains a job board specifically for the field
  • – ACPA (the American College Personnel Association) also lists positions and is particularly useful for those early in their career

Setting up email alerts on HigherEdJobs and LinkedIn for terms like “student affairs Maryland,” “Dean of Students,” or “residence life” will save you a lot of manual searching.

How to Stand Out as a Candidate

The student affairs hiring process tends to be thorough. Campus visits, multiple interview rounds, and presentations to search committees are common for anything above entry level. A few things that consistently matter:

Graduate assistantship experience counts for a lot at the entry level, particularly if you completed a master’s program with a practical component. Institutions want to see that you’ve already worked in a campus environment.

Specialization is increasingly valued. Candidates with specific experience in mental health support, first-generation student programming, or diversity and inclusion work tend to be competitive, as these areas have seen growing investment across Maryland campuses.

Tailoring your application materials to the specific institution matters more than many candidates realize. A large research university and a small liberal arts college are looking for very different things, even when the job title is identical.

A Good Time to Be Looking

Maryland’s higher education sector has remained relatively stable compared to some other states, and several institutions have been expanding student support services in response to post-pandemic student mental health needs. That’s created demand for counselors, case managers, and wellness coordinators in particular.

If student affairs is the direction you want to go, Maryland gives you a real range of options to work with.
