New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani cemented his status as a major force in Democratic politics on Tuesday, as his full slate of progressive candidates won their congressional primaries, including defeating two sitting House members in races that signal a genuine shift in the party’s internal power structure.

A clean sweep with real consequences

Darializa Avila Chevalier, a democratic socialist and former Columbia University protest organizer backed by Mamdani, defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat, the longtime congressman who leads the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Espaillat had spent decades building his political career, first winning his House seat in 2016 after years of trying. He arrived at his primary night party, delivered a concession speech in under ten minutes, and left.

Former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, also endorsed by Mamdani, beat two-term incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman in the 10th District. And democratic socialist state Assembly Member Claire Valdez won her race as well, completing a three-for-three night for Mamdani’s picks.

What Mamdani said at his victory celebration

Mamdani, who stunned the political world last June by defeating Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary, hosted a victory celebration about three miles from where Espaillat gave his concession speech. He framed the results as proof that his mayoral win was not a fluke.

“We are showing that last June, a year ago tomorrow, was not an anomaly,” Mamdani told supporters. “It was not the end. It was the beginning.”

The pressure on Hakeem Jeffries

The results put House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries in an uncomfortable position. Jeffries, who is Brooklyn-based and has long been a central figure in New York Democratic politics, is now losing two incumbent members aligned with his wing of the party. The wins suggest Mamdani’s influence extends well beyond his own mayoral race and that the democratic socialist left can organize effectively against establishment-backed candidates in safe Democratic seats.

What it means for 2028

Tuesday’s primaries were always going to be read as an early indicator of where the Democratic Party’s internal battles are heading ahead of the 2028 presidential primary cycle. Mamdani’s clean sweep gives the progressive left a concrete argument that their coalition can win, not just protest. For candidates in other cities and districts watching from a distance, the New York results will be difficult to ignore.
